South Africa v. Israel Genocide Convention Case: A Human Rights Explainer

On December 29, 2023, South Africa filed a lawsuit against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the wake of the October 7th Hamas attacks and Israel's bombing of the Gaza Strip. South Africa argued that Israel is in breach of its obligations to prevent and punish genocide and to prevent and punish incitement to genocide in regard to Palestinians in Gaza.
